How to Prep Your Home for Summer
Summer is finally here! In the whirlwind of graduations, company barbecues, and family vacations it can be easy to forget the little things that make your home summer ready. Don't worry, we've got a quick checklist to get you started:
1. Change your wardrobe
It's time to put the flannel and wool away and bring out your breezy summer wardrobe! Even if the summer heat hasn't really settled in yet, it's a good idea to pull out your summer clothes ahead of time. Having a pair of shorts on hand for when the first real heat wave comes in will be a life saver!
2. Store your winter gear
Give the rest of your home a summer update too! Switching out your curtains or carpets for their summer counterparts can really uplift the mood in your home. Put away your winter gear (blankets, snow shoes, snowblowers, etc.) and pull out your summer necessities (lawn mower, grill, lawn chairs, etc.).
3. Check your ventilation
It's important to check your ventilation for leaks before you turn it on for the season. Changing out the air filters on the unit can also be helpful for improving air quality in your home and the efficiency of the unit. Replacing an air filter is fairly simple thing to do yourself but you may need a professional to check your unit for suspected leaks.
4. Turn your fan
Most ceiling fans have a little switch that allows you the turn the direction of the blades. Flipping the switch so the fan turns counter-clockwise is a simple trick to push air downward and save a little money on AC.
5. Stock up on "summer goods"
Go through your cabinet and make sure you're well-stocked on typical summer products. Sunscreen, bug repellent, and a full first aid kit are a must! Grabbing some aloe vera just in case might not be a bad idea either.
And don't forget to unpack your favorite invisible cooling vest to get you through those blisteringly hot days!
